Why a Print Strike-Off Can Look Different on the Final Garment

A print strike-off is usually approved while lying flat on a table. The final garment is judged after the fabric has been cut, sewn, stretched over the body, washed, and viewed under different lighting.

That difference explains many print strike-off vs. final garment disputes.

The colors may appear darker, the artwork may look larger, fine lines may disappear, or the placement may feel unbalanced. A print that felt soft on a small panel can also become uncomfortable when it covers the entire chest.

The strike-off may not be incorrect. It may simply have approved less than the buyer thought it approved.

Print Strike-Off vs. Final Garment: What Was Actually Approved?

A print strike-off is a trial print used to evaluate artwork before bulk printing. Depending on the printing method, it may be produced on a small fabric cutting, a full pattern repeat, a cut garment panel, or a blank garment.

Terminology differs between suppliers, so the submission should clearly identify what the strike-off is intended to confirm.

The Print Can Be Correct While the Garment Still Feels Wrong

One large sweatshirt print development illustrates the problem.

The artwork looked clean, the color direction was correct, and the print appeared acceptable when reviewed visually. But once the sweatshirt was worn and folded, the printed front moved like one large panel instead of draping with the fleece.

The problem was not poor artwork or visibly incorrect color. The design contained a large solid area, and the dark sweatshirt required enough ink coverage to maintain opacity. The underbase and top colors created a heavier continuous print film across the chest.

A small printed section did not communicate how that coverage would affect the complete garment.

The Fabric Changes How the Print Looks

Surface Texture Affects Ink Coverage

Ink does not sit on every fabric in the same way.

A smooth, compact jersey can hold fine lines and solid colors differently from:

  • Brushed fleece
  • Waffle knit

  • Crinkle fabric
  • Mesh
  • Open performance knits
  • Heavily textured fabrics

Fibers on a brushed surface can break up sharp edges. Deep texture can leave small unprinted areas. An absorbent fabric may pull pigment below the visible surface, making the print appear less saturated.

The relevant approval is therefore not only "red print approved." It is "red print approved on the identified fabric color, using the approved underbase and printing process."

Cutting and Sewing Change the Artwork

A Flat Repeat Is Not a Garment Placement

An all-over print strike-off may show that the repeat, colors, and registration are correct. It does not show exactly where the pattern will fall on every garment.

After cutting, the same print can appear differently because:

  • Large motifs may be cut at panel edges

Artwork viewed on a flat panel is seen as a rectangle. Once sewn, the fabric wraps around the chest, shoulder, hip, sleeve, or leg.

Curved areas can make circles appear oval and straight lines appear bent. A large chest print may look wider on a small garment and more isolated on a larger size if one artwork size is used across the full size range.

Print placement should therefore be checked against:

Stretch Can Open and Distort the Print

A print may look dense and correctly proportioned while the fabric is relaxed. When worn, the fabric opens and changes the artwork. Colors may appear lighter, gaps may become visible, and fine details can distort.

This is particularly important in activewear and swimwear manufacturing, where the garment may stretch significantly across the bust, hips, seat, or thighs.

The strike-off should be evaluated:

  • Relaxed
  • At the intended wearing stretch
  • After recovery
  • Across seams when relevant
  • After washing
  • Wet when required by the end use

The fabric should not be stretched arbitrarily during approval. Testing should represent the extension expected in the finished garment.

A photograph sent through email or messaging can support communication, but screens, cameras, and automatic image processing make it unsuitable as the only color standard.

What Should Be Recorded on a Print Strike-Off?

A useful strike-off submission should identify:

  • Artwork name and revision
  • Print method
  • Fabric article, composition and color
  • Whether the fabric is sample or bulk quality
  • Artwork dimensions or pattern repeat
  • Print colors and reference standards
  • Underbase or blocker where applicable

  • Submission date and approval status

For OEM clothing manufacturing, production and QC should retain the approved physical standard. Written approval without an identified strike-off can leave the printing team comparing bulk output with the wrong version.
